I am (like you) multifaceted and curious.
Something Out of Nothing is about meaning — making, finding, and offering it.
We (royal we, though it’s just me) cross a lot of genres here:
Writing Books Aging Travel Teaching Interiors Thrifting Crafting Art-making Midlife Relationships Community Love Lust Money Health Dreams Music
I’m a writer trying to finish a book. It’s been several years. I wrote about some of that experience here.
I write about the creative process, process-making, and creating community outside of the traditional feedback dynamic. I wrote about some of that experience here.
I’ve been an adjunct instructor for five years, and I am ever searching for, and experimenting with, alternate ways to both sustain my sense of self and still authentically engage with my students. I wrote about some of that experience here.
I love asking writers and artists and creators about how they take care of themselves. Here’s a writer, here’s an artist, here’s a creator.
I am a late bloomer, a partner, a stepmom, a lifelong writer, reader, thrifter. I grew up in Minnesota, fled to New York, wandered down to Virginia. I write at my desk at home, in the car, at the library, in coffee shops and museums, at a friend’s kitchen table and at my own.
What does a SOON subscription include?
Usually, twice-monthly issues, on any of the subjects already mentioned (maybe more! We don’t niche down around here).
Occasional playlists for every mood and whim under the sky. (We cross many genres here, too!)
First-look opportunities and discount codes for shopping at my online vintage store, Intentional Assembly.
Occasional meet-ups for conversation, books swaps, resource sharing (online or in-person, depending).
Spontaneous group chats in the app.
Twice-yearly one-day writing classes (online or in-person, depending, and specifically fiction or nonfiction).
Snail mail—sometimes!
Right now, SOON is entirely free to access.
But if you enjoy your experience, I ask you to consider a voluntary paid subscription of $5/month, $50/year, or $200/year as a Founding Reader. Whatever you’re able, if you’re able, but everyone has the same access regardless. Voluntary paid subscriptions are an experiment. Your readership, with or without the ability to pay, is an investment in my work.
A few dollars here or there helps to fund the time it takes to write new issues of SOON, and allows me to put some extra savings aside for times when teaching opportunities are lean (hello, summertime).
Thank you for being here. Send me a message if you want.
Be well & speak soon—
April
